Public call for help with heating bills

Levies on the UK's largest energy providers and cleaner and more efficient energy are being backed by the public, a new poll has revealed.

YouGov surveyed more than 1,772 people and found that around three-quarters (77%) believe ring-fenced money from the levies should go towards helping households reduce their central heating bills and other fuel costs.

In total, 71% of the people polled supported the idea of a levy.

A further 70% want to see the Government force the biggest energy companies, dubbed the 'big six', to invest in renewable power, while 86% are in support of an independent public inquiry into the larger energy providers.

The research was commissioned by Compass, a group seeking to influence Government policy, and charity Friends of the Earth.

Andy Atkins, executive director of Friends of the Earth, said: "The big six energy firms are making massive profits from keeping us hooked on dirty coal and expensive imported gas."
