Oil-buying initiative continuing

Devon homeowners could save as much as £100 per year on heating oil thanks to a new nation-wide scheme.

This Is North Devon says the Devon Oil Collective is based on a similar scheme for Oxfordshire, where people cut their bills by buying heating oil in bulk collectively.

For every 1,000 litres of oil, savings of around £30 to £50 can be made, the equivalent of £100 for every household. Devon Community Council has now launched the scheme, with help and financial aid from the County Council.

The Community Council of Devon chief executive Elaine Cook said: "Through negotiation with heating oil suppliers, we will be able to pass on reduced rates to participating households and business premises. The savings are made on the strength of the orders. The more oil orders we take on behalf of households, the more negotiating strength we have with suppliers and the better the rates.

"We act like a broker. We negotiate the rate and make the orders on people's behalf."
