New challenge for heating oil groups

The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills has joined forces with Co-operatives UK to launch a project which aims to encourage people to think collectively and combine their buying power.

Consumer affairs minister Norman Lamb said that the £60,000 Buy Better Together Challenge - which promotes co-operative buying - could benefit schemes like heating oil groups and food co-operatives.

He added: "Community buying has a range of uses to give consumers a bigger voice - from food co-operatives to heating oil groups - and I look forward to seeing the innovative ideas later this year."

Co-operatives UK recently released research which claims that just under a fifth (17%) of people in the UK already buy in bulk with others in a bid to save money.

Applications for the challenge are now open for groups and organisations in the public, voluntary and business sectors which are looking to create new community buying schemes, or develop existing ones.
