Heating oil thieves target Cumbria

A large quantity of heating oil has been stolen in south Cumbria, reports indicate, adding to the series of thefts in the area.

The Westmorland Gazette reports that diesel oil was stolen from the Bowness and Sawry areas between Friday, February 10 and Sunday, February 12.

There have been about eight heating oil thefts in the rural areas of south Cumbria since the beginning of the year, according to police officers.

Police believe the thieves must be using vehicles that contain large storage tanks, or many small containers, given the locations of the thefts and the large quantities of oil which have been stolen.

Inspector Rob Lampard, from South Cumbria Police, said: "We are investigating six reported heating oil thefts and we are appealing for help from the public to trace whoever is responsible."
